The hoop stress is generated via internal pressurization, based on a novel method advanced and patented by IMMG. The main feature relates to the safe transmission of steady and monotonically or cyclically varying pressure under high/low temperatures. The technique has been thoroughly tested and allows the execution of mechanical and/or thermal fatigue experiments. More specifically:

- In the temperature range from -50ºC to 1600ºC, use is made of an assembly of zirconia microspheres of sizes between 5 and 80 ìm, covered by a solid lubricant. This allows for the transmission of steady or monotonically increasing pressure under temperatures that may vary with time.

- For temperatures between 300ºC and 2200ºC, a mixture of melted oxides with a specified composition is employed, assuring suitable viscosities in the desired temperature range and offering the capability for the transmission of steady or time varying pressure under temperatures that may change with time in the above mentioned range. Safety of operation is guaranteed as the use of gases which may lead to explosive events in case of leakage or specimen failure is avoided.
